Two years ago, I visited (lived in?) Altus, Oklahoma for about four months. In that period of time, I explored the town and surroundings without managing to get bored. My final blog post, linked below, summarized some of my adventures and the good times I had with friends during that four month period.
Now I find myself back in Altus, only for about a month or so, but with the same longing to get out and see the sights. Motivated by my lack of interest in TV (although admittedly I spend more time than I should on the internet) and a desire to prove to the world that any place is simply what you make of it, I'm back at it. Here are some pictures for your viewing pleasure!
I'm happy to note that while two years ago, Altus was in a severe drought and the lake was extremely low, it is quite full to the brim this time! The picture on the left was taken in the spring of 2013, and the right in July of 2015.
You can see another one of the metal doors to the top of this thing was thrown inside... giving a better view of the inside (see below). Still not sure what it was used for.
Also, we used to hike through the valley in the picture below (the entire area covered in water) and sit up on the hillside around dusk, watching all the dear and other animals make their rounds. I guess they have to go swimming now!
Found this old gem... apparently an old state highway that is now... dirt.
Still no shortage of old, abandoned buildings... this one has a nice cob web in the window ;)
The small amusement park below sits right outside Altus, and while it looks pretty shady, I think it still runs! Maybe one of these days, I'll brave the rust and see how I fare.
And lastly, this guy sits at the Altus Airport...first time I've ever stopped though.
Overall, it's wicked hot here in Altus, but I can't complain about being able to visit Quartz Mountain again, especially to see the lake so full!
